Vietnam supports Palestine to soon join the UN 3

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the permanent delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), during the meeting on May 13 announced that Vietnam co-sponsored and supported the historic resolution of the General Assembly, supporting the House of Representatives.

The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam stands side by side with Palestine in exercising its inalienable right to self-determination and supports Palestine to soon join as a full member of the UN;

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang emphasized that Vietnam’s solidarity and unceasing support for Palestine has its deep roots in the long-term common struggle for sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and freedom.

Previously, during the session on May 10, the UN General Assembly voted on the prospect of admitting Palestine as a full member of the organization.

The resolution also adds some rights to Palestine in its current status as an observer.

The resolution was introduced by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and co-sponsored by 77 countries, including Vietnam.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas applied for UN member state status in 2011. The Security Council did not approve this, but the UN General Assembly a year later granted observer status to Palestine.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang on May 13 also expressed concern about the risk of the conflict in Gaza escalating into a regional war, strongly condemning all forms of violence against civilians and essential civilian infrastructure.

He called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, dialogue and comply with international law, the Charter and relevant resolutions of the UN, implement an immediate and permanent ceasefire, and unconditionally release all

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang reaffirmed that Vietnam supports the two-state solution and continues to support the central role of the United Nations Agency for Relief of Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in implementing humanitarian relief responsibilities in the region.

More than 35,000 people in the Gaza Strip have died because of Israel’s offensive campaign, after Hamas raided the south of the country in October 2023, killing more than 1,100 people.
